Rembrandt, Vermeer, Van Gogh, Mondrian – the Netherlands has produced some of art history's most influential painters. From the Old Masters of the Dutch Era to cutting-edge contemporary design, the country is world-famous for its contributions to art and design. Despite its small size, the Netherlands' influence on the art world continues into modern times, showing that art reaches beyond paintings and museums and where the next generation of designers takes to the stage.
There is a unique cycle path in Brabant, the southern part of the Netherlands, just outside Nuenen. At dusk, visitors are surprised by a design of light and colour inspired by the world-famous work The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh. The 600-meter-long cycle path - near where the painter lived - is a magical experience. Thousands of sparkling stones are littered on the trail that receives energy from the sun during the day and, therefore, light up in the evening.
Artist Daan Roosegaarde wanted to create a path that would give cyclists the feeling of cycling through a painting. Together with the Dutch construction company Heijmans, they developed an innovative technology primarily for the cycle path, resulting in a play of light and poetry. Roosegaarde: "I wanted to create a place that people experience as special - technology linked to experience - that is what techno-poetry stands for for me.
Vincent Van Gogh painted his first masterpiece, The Potato Eaters, in Nuenen and also captured the Opwetten Watermill and the Collse Watermill in his paintings. The unique cycle path lies between those two mills, bridging the gap between contemporary design, innovation, cultural heritage and tourism in Brabant.
The cycle path - located between Eindhoven and Nuenen – is freely accessible to everyone and is part of the Van Gogh Cycle Routes that connect Vincent van Gogh's heritage locations in Brabant, Vincent's Homeland. Watch this video to find out yourself about discovering this genuinely magical experience yourself.
