Singapore's first polder
Singapore has unveiled its first polder, a reclaimed land area below sea level, on Pulau Tekong, spanning 800 hectares.
This innovative project employs the Dutch-inspired "empoldering" method, using 50% less sand than traditional reclamation techniques. A robust 10km coastal dike, designed to withstand rising sea levels, encircles the area, ensuring long-term resilience. The reclaimed land will serve as a dedicated military training zone, alleviating space constraints on the mainland and supporting the Singapore Armed Forces' evolving needs.
This ambitious initiative not only showcases Singapore's commitment to sustainable development but also highlights the nation's proactive approach to climate change adaptation and land use optimisation.
