High-tech and digitalisation

Meet us at Common GroundButton translation JP

Japan and the Netherlands are both pioneers in design, development and manufacture of high-tech equipment. We have a strong mutual interest in topics such as semiconductors, quantum photonics and nanotechnology. The Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai Japan is a great platform for presenting the Netherlands’ knowledge and innovation in high tech systems and materials, made possible through close cooperation between government bodies, businesses, and knowledge institutions.

For Japan and the Netherlands, digital transformation using technologies such as AI, robotics, data, Internet of Things (IoT) and 5G/6G plays an important role in addressing societal challenges. Our countries have complementary expertise in digitalisation. For example, the Netherlands is strong in software development and Japan in hardware development. The Netherlands is strong in using data and Japan in collecting data. Further cooperation in digital transformation will benefit both our countries. We will also explore cross-sectoral collaboration, for example in precision agriculture and e-health.

We will showcase innovation in:

- semiconductors
- photonics
- quantum
- Artificial Intelligence (AI)
- digitalisation

Semiconductors
With an ecosystem of more than 300 companies and knowledge institutes, the Netherlands has a strong position over the whole value and supply chain for semiconductors, from chip design to production facilities and from new functionalities to commercial applications. We are keen to share our expertise and find new ways for cooperation in innovation and business.

Photonics
The Netherlands is a leader in furthering the use of light (photons) in digital communication. This is important because current communication networks, datacenters, semiconductors and others rely on electrons, which have limits in speed and capacity, and use more energy. Photonics is the enabler for new communication systems of the future. The Netherlands is keen to share expertise and find cooperation in developing and implementing the possibilities with photonics!

Quantum
The Netherlands is involved from the very start in the development of quantum technology, which will soon have a visible place in society. In the coming years, quantum computers will enable revolutionary applications in sectors like communication, healthcare, finance, cyber security etc. The Netherlands is active as attractive leader and partner in the field.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)
The Netherlands is promoting responsible, human-centric AI via a well-organised ecosystem: forums in which companies, academia, and government meet and collaborate in public-private partnership. To apply AI to solve societal challenges, the government is stimulating business and R&D and innovation activities via heavy investment of the National Growth Fund.

Digitalisation
The Netherlands is one of the top countries in the world in digitalisation. Digital transformations are accelerating in many industries, such as agriculture, health, manufacturing, and services. In addition to technological leadership and implementation, the Netherlands also puts a lot of effort in the development of human capital, adaptation of legislation, and adoption of a digital mindset, which are all needed for a sustainable and successful digital transformation.
