#WorldFoodDay: our global commitment to food security
October 16 marks World Food Day, an important global event that calls attention to one of humanity’s most pressing challenges: ensuring everyone has access to enough nutritious food. The theme for 2024, Rights to Food, speaks to the heart of this issue—food is a basic human right, and ensuring equitable access is more critical than ever.
With global recognition in sustainable agriculture and food innovation, the Netherlands is committed to making this vision a reality. But we know we can’t do it alone. That’s why we’re forging international partnerships across the board to build solutions that address food insecurity head-on.
Innovating for a food-secure future
The Netherlands may be small in size, but our impact on global agriculture is anything but. Whether it’s precision agriculture, vertical farming, or pioneering alternative proteins, Dutch companies are driving the innovations that make farming smarter, more sustainable, and more resilient to the challenges we face.
What makes us unique? Our ambition to share our expertise. By collaborating with international partners, the Netherlands is helping to scale up sustainable farming practices worldwide. It’s not just about growing more food; it’s about growing it in ways that safeguard the planet and ensure long-term food security for everyone.
Partnerships that matter
We believe that the road to a food-secure future is best traveled together. The Dutch government, in collaboration with agricultural companies, NGOs, and research institutions, is building a network of partnerships that span the globe. We’re working with communities to adapt to climate change, improve access to nutritious food, and tackle food waste.
For example, in India HortiRoad2India is an initiative aimed at fostering collaboration between the Dutch horticultural sector and Indian stakeholders. By working together and adapting solutions to local circumstances, the programme can support India’s horticulture sector to produce better quality products. Meanwhile, in the Middle East, we’re actively promoting sustainable food systems by introducing circular protein sources such as insect and poultry byproducts, particularly in Egypt and Jordan. This approach aims to enhance food security while reducing dependency on imported soy and fishmeal.
But we’re just getting started. If we’re going to meet the global food challenge, we need more partners—innovators, entrepreneurs, and visionaries—who share our mission to ensure that everyone, everywhere, has their basic right to food.
Join the Movement
On this World Food Day 2024, the Netherlands is extending an open invitation to international businesses and organisations to join us in ensuring food security. Together, we can combine expertise, innovations, and the determination to build a future where Rights to Food is more than a theme—it’s a global reality.
Ready to be part of the solution? Let’s work together to create a food-secure world where every person has access to safe, sustainable, and nutritious food.
